Launch of Volunteer Activities in the Heart of Edirne

Edirne, the city of mosques and history, is currently hosting a group of passionate young people who have come to the region with a purpose beyond tourism. The Damla Volunteer Movement, one of the flagship projects of the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Turkey, has started its activities in this border city. Built on the foundations of humanity and selfless service, this program seeks to create deeper bonds between the younger generation and various segments of society [1].

In this phase of the project, which officially kicked off in Edirne on July 19, 2026, 40 volunteer students from various universities—including both local and international students—have gathered. This cultural diversity among the volunteers is considered one of the project's strengths, as it brings about cultural exchange and strengthens the spirit of brotherhood alongside executive activities [4].

From Local Markets to Historical Squares

The group's programs in Edirne are designed to be diverse and impactful. During the first days of their stay, the volunteers visited the Saturday market (Cumartesi Pazarı) to meet with tradesmen and local people. This direct interaction with the community was an opportunity to hear people's concerns and promote a culture of kindness. Additionally, orienteering competitions were held at the 'Özgür Çocuklar Parkı' (Free Children's Park) to strengthen teamwork and social vitality [2].

One of the important aspects of this movement is the focus on the environment and cultural heritage. On the second day of their activities, the volunteers went to the historical 'Sarayiçi' area, where the famous 'Kırkpınar Er Meydanı' is located. By cleaning the surroundings of this historical square, they sent a clear message to citizens and tourists about the importance of preserving natural and cultural heritage [4][5].

Goals and Vision of the Damla Movement

The Damla project is not limited to environmental activities. Visiting the elderly in nursing homes, meeting with low-income families, and spending time with children in care centers are other core parts of this 10-day journey. The ultimate goal is for each volunteer to act like a 'drop' (the meaning of the word 'Damla' in Turkish) which, by joining other drops, creates a sea of positive social change [3].

This movement, which will continue in Edirne until July 26, demonstrates the commitment of youth to social responsibilities and their key role in the sustainable development of local communities.
