As the university preference marathon begins in Turkey, the Sakarya Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers (İMO) issued a statement calling on youth to step towards scientifically rebuilding the country's future based on technical knowledge.
With the arrival of July 2026 and the start of the critical university preference period for candidates in Turkey, the Sakarya Branch of the Chamber of Civil Engineers (İMO) held a special meeting to guide the new generation. Semih Uçar, the Branch President, emphasized the importance of choosing a field of study based on scientific criteria and the country's strategic needs in an official statement addressed to youth and their families [1].
Sakarya Chamber of Engineers' Call to University Candidates During the meeting held at the İMO Sakarya conference hall, Semih Uçar stated that choosing a major is not just an academic decision, but a major step toward shaping the future of individual and social life. Under the slogan "Build the Future with Science and Technique," he invited talented students to enter the field of civil engineering. According to him, the country needs specialized personnel who can create safe and sustainable infrastructure using modern technologies [2].
Civil Engineering; Beyond Simple Construction One of the main focuses of this call was to correct the public perception of civil engineering. Uçar emphasized that this profession is not limited to residential buildings. Civil engineering includes vital areas such as earthquake safety, the construction of massive bridges, tunnels, metro lines, high-speed train projects, dams, energy facilities, and water and sewage networks [1]. He noted that civil engineers are essentially the architects of societal safety and welfare, and their role in sustainable development is undeniable.
Success Criteria and Scoring System for Candidates A notable point in this year's İMO Sakarya statement was the introduction of a self-assessment system for candidates. Based on these criteria, students who score high in indicators such as imagination, problem-solving ability, analytical thinking, leadership skills, teamwork, and interest in mathematics and physics are more suitable for this field [2]. Uçar announced that candidates who score higher than 25 in this mental assessment have high potential to become successful engineers in the future.
Invitation to Collaborate in Rebuilding the Future At the end of the meeting, the İMO Sakarya management challenged the youth to accept great responsibilities by asking, "Are you ready to be part of this great and respected profession?" Given the climate challenges and the urgent need for urban renewal in 2026, relying on scientific and technical principles in civil engineering has become more important than ever [1]. The institution announced that it is ready to provide professional counseling to students at the Sakarya Chamber of Engineers building throughout the preference period.
