International Students at Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University Discover Turkey's Rich Culture

A Cultural Journey Begins in the Heart of Anatolia Tokat Gaziosmanpaşa University (TOGÜ), in collaboration with the Yunus Emre Institute, is hosting an exceptional course for international students. In this program, which began in early July 2026, 15 students from 14 different countries, including Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Morocco, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Egypt, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Russia, are participating [3]. The goal of this one-month course is not only Turkish language education but also a deep introduction to Turkey's scientific, historical, and cultural potential. Students attend intensive language classes in the mornings and discover the cultural treasures of Tokat in the afternoons [1].

Art in the Students' Hands: From Tiling to Coppersmithing One of the most attractive parts of this program is the art workshops at the Gökmedrese Science and Art Center. Students at this center were introduced to traditional Turkish arts, including Çini (traditional tiling), batik printing, and woodblock printing [1]. Additionally, in specialized workshops, the experience of making copper bracelets and familiarity with the intricacies of Tokat handicrafts were passed on to the students. These practical activities allow students to connect with the spirit of Oriental and Anatolian art beyond textbooks and create works with their own hands that they will take back to their countries as valuable souvenirs [2].

Lived Experiences: Traditional Nights and Turkish Cuisine Turkish culture is not just found in museums; it flows through its social customs. In the second week of their program, international students participated in a traditional Sıra Gecesi ceremony, which included local music, intimate conversations, and traditional treats [1]. Furthermore, a symbolic Kına Gecesi (Henna Night) was recreated for them to learn about marriage rituals in Turkish culture [2]. In another part of the program, students learned how to bake traditional Turkish bread and pastries in the university's training kitchen to experience the authentic taste of Anatolian cuisine.

Scientific Diplomacy and Global Bonds Prof. Dr. Fatih Yılmaz, Rector of TOGÜ, emphasized during his meetings with these students that these programs are more than just a simple training course. He called these students "cultural ambassadors" who will strengthen the bonds between nations after returning to their countries [3]. Visits to historical sites such as Tokat Castle, Ballıca Cave, and a meeting with the Mayor of Tokat are part of the university's strategy to comprehensively introduce the social and historical identity of the region to educated international youth [1]. These events, which will continue until the end of July, are an important step toward strengthening Turkey's scientific and cultural diplomacy.
