Ruth Samson Gezachew, a talented Ethiopian student, has become a symbol of academic success and educational diplomacy between Turkey and the African continent by ranking first in the Faculty of International Relations at Turkey's prestigious Hacettepe University.
At the 2026 graduation ceremony of Hacettepe University, one of Turkey's most prestigious higher education centers, the name of an international student shone brightest. Ruth Samson Gezachew, a student from Ethiopia, succeeded in securing the first rank in the Faculty of International Relations with the highest grades. This success is not only a personal achievement for her but also a testament to the effectiveness of student exchange programs between the two countries [1].
Success Under the Shadow of Turkey Scholarships Gezachew completed her studies in Turkey under the auspices of the "Türkiye Bursları" (Turkey Scholarships) program and with the support of the Presidency for Turks Abroad and Related Communities (YTB). Speaking to the media, she stated that she chose Turkey because of its strategic position between East and West and the high quality of education in the field of international relations. She believes that studying in Ankara has given her a different and comprehensive perspective on global issues [2].
A Bridge Between Addis Ababa and Ankara The distinguished graduate described her main goal as serving as a "bridge" between Ethiopia and Turkey. Referring to the Turkish President's statement that "the world is bigger than five," Gezachew emphasized that this vision is very inspiring for developing countries. She intends to contribute to strengthening academic and diplomatic relations between the two nations by returning to her country or working in international arenas [1].
Cultural Experience and Turkish Hospitality One of the fascinating parts of Gezachew's experience in Turkey has been her integration into the country's culture and language. She says that phrases like "May it be easy" (Kolay gelsin) and "May God be pleased with you" (Allah razı olsun) reflect the sincerity and helpful spirit of the Turkish people, which is rarely seen in other cultures. She emphasized that after returning to Ethiopia, she will miss her friends, professors, and the warm hospitality of the Turkish people more than anything [2].
This success comes at a time when Hacettepe University has made extensive efforts in recent years to attract international elites and improve its scientific ranking globally [3]. Gezachew has now paved the way for other Ethiopian students as a cultural ambassador.
