Istanbul Bilgi University (BİLGİ), in collaboration with the Anatolian University Libraries Consortium (ANKOS), hosted the third specialized Artificial Intelligence workshop. The event focused on competencies, inter-institutional collaborations, and ethical challenges in scientific resource management.
On June 23, 2026, the "santralistanbul" campus of Bilgi University hosted a decisive event for the future of knowledge management in Turkey. The meeting, titled "Artificial Intelligence in Academic Libraries: Competence, Collaboration, and Ethics," brought together library directors, information specialists, and academics from across the Marmara region to examine transformations driven by new technologies [1].
Digital Transformation at the Heart of Academic Libraries Dr. Sami Çuhadar, Director of the Library and Documentation Department at Bilgi University, emphasized in his opening speech that AI is no longer just a technical tool but has become the driving engine of change in information access. He noted that with the emergence of generative AI, the responsibility of libraries has expanded from merely providing resources to actively supporting research processes and promoting AI literacy [1][2]. Libraries are now recognized as guiding centers in the digital transformation path that must adapt to the changing needs of researchers.
Generative AI and Ethical Challenges One of the main focuses of this workshop was the examination of tools for detecting plagiarism and maintaining transparency in scientific research. With the growing use of models like ChatGPT and Claude in academic environments, topics such as ethical standards and collaboration models with "AI Agents" were intensely discussed [2]. Participants believed that the use of AI in literature reviews and data analysis must be accompanied by strict adherence to privacy and scientific accuracy to maintain the credibility of academic institutions.
Regional Collaborations and Future Outlook İsmail Çetinkaya, President of ANKOS, announced at the meeting that the consortium established the AI Research Group in 2024 for the first time in Turkey to institutionalize the sustainable and ethical use of this technology in information services [1]. This workshop, attended by representatives from 76 universities, is considered an important step toward creating a shared national vision. Experts emphasized that in the future, competition among universities will not be over the power of AI models, but over how these tools are organized and coordinated within educational ecosystems [1].
In conclusion, the meeting emphasized that the role of librarians is evolving from "book keepers" to "strategic information consultants." Mastering skills such as data literacy and AI context management will be undeniable necessities for the new generation of library professionals in 2026 and beyond.
