In a strategic meeting on July 1, 2026, senior Turkish academic, government, and industrial officials agreed on the implementation details of the massive Aliağa "Teknokent" project; a project aimed at transforming this industrial region into a hub for innovation and advanced technologies.

Convergence of University, Municipality, and Industry in Aliağa

On July 1, 2026, the Aliağa region witnessed a decisive consultative meeting that mapped out the economic and scientific future of this industrial hub. The meeting was attended by Serkan Acar, Mayor of Aliağa; Haluk Tezcan, Chairman of the Board of the Aliağa Chemical and Mixed Industrial Zone (ALOSBİ); and Prof. Dr. Rasim Akpınar, Rector of Izmir Bakırçay University [1]. The primary goal of this gathering was to finalize cooperation protocols for establishing a Science and Technology Park (Teknokent) in the heart of one of Turkey's most strategic industrial zones.

This project, initiated by Izmir Bakırçay University, seeks to create a tripartite cooperation model between "University, Industry, and Government." During the meeting, in addition to senior executives, prominent academic figures such as Dr. Ali Köstepen (University General Secretary) and the deans of the faculties of Engineering and Medicine were present to examine the technical and research dimensions of the plan [1].

Strategic Goals and the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem

The Aliağa Teknokent project is more than just a simple office space; it is designed as a platform to strengthen Research and Development (R&D) activities and support technology-oriented startups. Participants at the meeting emphasized the importance of creating shared workspaces that lead to high value-added production [1].

Haluk Tezcan, Chairman of ALOSBİ, noted in this regard that their goal is not merely to replicate existing models but to create a tangible difference in industrial production through innovation. He had previously emphasized the necessity for industrialists to benefit from academic support to increase Turkey's competitiveness in global markets [2]. This science park is intended to act as a regional attraction center for entrepreneurs and elites seeking to transform scientific ideas into commercial products.

The Role of Bakırçay University and Future Outlook

Bakırçay University, relying on its academic knowledge, and the Aliağa Municipality, with its modern urban management vision, alongside the powerful infrastructure of ALOSBİ, have formed a triangle that could transform Aliağa from a purely industrial zone into a "knowledge-based city" [1]. Mayor Serkan Acar previously stated that his vision for Aliağa goes beyond factory chimneys, as he seeks to improve living standards and transform the region into a coastal city with advanced and modern infrastructure [3].

The establishment of this Teknokent, in addition to creating new job opportunities for young graduates, will allow companies located in the Aliağa industrial zone to benefit from tax incentives and support for R&D centers [2]. It is expected that with the implementation of this project, Aliağa will become one of the most important innovation centers in the Aegean basin and play a key role in the supply chain of new technologies.
