Following the official notification of changes in the Anadolu University Open Education Faculty (AÖF) regulations, new rules for grading and exams have been established that will alter the academic path of thousands of students in the upcoming academic year.
Recent changes to the Anadolu University executive regulations, registered in the Turkish Official Gazette, have raised many questions among distance learning system (AÖF) students. These reforms, which became effective in July 2026, directly impact grade calculation methods, summer school participation conditions, and graduation criteria [1]. In this report, we take a detailed look at these changes and what awaits the students.
Reforms in Passing Scores and Grading Systems One of the most significant sections modified in the new regulations concerns the "Passing Score" (Başarı Notu). Based on new decisions by the university management, the weighting system for midterm and final exams has been revised. Previously, the midterm score accounted for 30% and the final score for 70% of the total grade; however, the new amendment seeks to include the impact of continuous classroom activities and online projects in the final grade [2]. This move aims to increase educational quality and encourage students to participate actively throughout the semester.
New Rules for Summer School and Single-Course Exams Extensive changes have also been applied to the "Summer School" (Yaz Okulu) section. According to the new regulations, new restrictions on course selection during the summer term have been established, and priority will be given to students on the verge of graduation. Furthermore, the rule known as "four wrongs cancel one right" will continue to be applied more strictly in national exams to maintain the academic integrity of the degrees [3]. Students should note that the registration timeline for summer courses has also changed and shortened compared to previous years.
Impact on Graduation and International Students For Iranian students and other foreign nationals studying at various levels of AÖF, changes in the Grade Point Average (GPA) criteria for graduation are of high importance. According to the new clauses, students whose GPA falls below a certain level will be required to take remedial courses or repeat certain low-coefficient subjects [1]. These changes are designed to align distance education standards with international face-to-face education standards. The university management emphasized that all these reforms were necessary to enhance the university's academic standing in global rankings [2].
New changes in AÖF academic regulations were officially implemented across Turkey starting July 2026.
