A team of creative students from Başkent University in Ankara has developed smart glasses that use artificial intelligence to identify environmental obstacles and banknote values, announcing them vocally to blind users.

On July 6, 2026, the DHA news agency reported on a technological achievement by students from the Department of Computer Engineering at Başkent Üniversitesi. The project, named "Safe Step," was designed and implemented by four students: Ata Eren Tekli, Dilan Saygılı, Mehmet Can Yılmam, and Güneş Gürlek [1]. The primary goal of this invention is to reduce the dependence of blind individuals on white canes and increase their safety in urban environments.

Technical Capabilities and Intelligent Obstacle Detection These smart glasses are equipped with an advanced camera that processes images of the surrounding environment in real-time. The visual data is sent via Bluetooth connection to a dedicated mobile application, and after analysis by artificial intelligence algorithms, the results resonate as audio feedback in the user's ear [2].

According to the creators, the system is capable of detecting common obstacles such as trees, cars, stairs, and even potholes in the path. Güneş Gürlek, a team member, explained that many blind people encounter unexpected obstacles while moving on designated paths that traditional canes cannot identify early; however, these glasses can prevent accidents with an audio warning like "pothole ahead of you" [1][3].

Banknote Identification and Facilitating Financial Affairs One of the unique features of the Safe Step project is its ability to identify currency units. The glasses can recognize Turkish Lira banknotes and announce their value to the user. This capability not only helps the blind with daily shopping but also prevents potential exploitation and financial fraud against them [1]. Interestingly, the system can calculate the total sum of multiple banknotes placed in front of the camera simultaneously and announce it as a single total figure [2].

Development Process and Future Outlook The construction of this prototype took about 9 months, and its testing phases have been successfully completed. One of the humanitarian aspects of this project was the testing of the device by the blind grandfather of one of the team members, who expressed full satisfaction with its performance [3].

The development team is now working to make the glasses' design more compact and lightweight to be more comfortable for long-term use. They hope to bring this product to the mass production stage by attracting investors and provide it to the disabled community as an economical and local solution [2][3]. This innovation demonstrates the high potential of Turkish universities in solving social challenges through modern technologies.
