Donald Trump, the US President, claimed that Iranian officials recently contacted him expressing a strong desire to reach a new agreement; a claim made in the midst of widespread United States airstrikes.

Claim of a Phone Call from Tehran During his return from the NATO summit in Ankara, Donald Trump made new controversial remarks regarding relations with Iran aboard his new private aircraft. He claimed that Tehran officials called him "just a short while ago" and are "desperately" seeking to sign a deal. These statements come as military tensions between the two countries have reached their peak in recent days. Trump told reporters that Iran is in a difficult position and has therefore requested a return to the negotiating table. ## End of Ceasefire and Escalation of Military Conflicts Trump's claims came only hours after he effectively declared the June 2026 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) "finished." He severely criticized Tehran's performance, calling the negotiations a "waste of time." Simultaneously, US Central Command (CENTCOM) confirmed that its forces attacked more than 90 military targets on Iranian soil, including Bandar Abbas and Chabahar, in response to attacks on commercial ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Trump emphasized that any attack on American interests would be met with a "20-fold" response. ## Trump's Doubt: "They Don't Deserve a Deal" Despite claiming Iran made contact, the US President used very harsh language against the country's leaders. He addressed them with terms such as "corrupt" and "liars," saying, "I don't know if they even deserve a deal. The problem is I'm not sure they would stick to any agreement." He also referred to threats against himself, jokingly telling reporters that he is "number one" on Iran's target list. ## Sharp Reaction from Iranian Officials to Trump's Remarks Islamic Republic of Iran officials immediately reacted to these claims. Abbas Araghchi, Iran's Foreign Minister, described Trump's words as "vulgar" in a message on the social media platform X, writing that Iran responds with "action and courage" instead of words. Additionally, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, the Speaker of the Iranian Parliament, rejected any retreat, emphasizing that the era of "bullying and extortion" is over and that Iran will not allow the security of the Strait of Hormuz to be threatened by the US. ## Outlook for Diplomacy in the Shadow of War While Trump claims Iran is "dying" for a deal, the situation on the ground indicates a full-scale military confrontation. Oil prices have jumped in global markets due to these tensions, and concerns about a widespread war in the Middle East have increased. However, Trump claims that any military conflict would end "very quickly" in favor of the US, although he still keeps the option of negotiation on the table as a weak possibility.

Trump, on his way back from Ankara, expressed doubt about Iran's sincerity while claiming Tehran initiated the deal.
