While food inflation in Turkey continues to overshadow daily life, new reports show that the cost of meeting the minimum food requirements for a family of four has reached over 36,000 Lira [1].

New Record in Living Costs According to the latest report from the Worker Class Research Center (BİSAM) published on July 16, 2026, the "hunger threshold" for a family of four in Turkey has increased to 36,324 Lira [3]. This figure, described in local media with the headline "cost of entering the kitchen," represents the minimum amount a family must spend monthly just to maintain a healthy and balanced diet [2]. Meanwhile, if other essential expenses such as rent, energy bills, education, and health are added to this amount, the "poverty line" for the same family reaches a staggering 119,330 Lira [1].

Food Basket Details: Dairy Leads Expenses Analysis of statistical data shows that daily food costs for a family have risen to 1,211 Lira. Among these, the milk and dairy products group, with a daily cost of 432 Lira, accounts for the largest share (approximately 35.7 percent) of the household food budget [3]. This is followed by fruits and vegetables at 275 Lira, and meat, eggs, and legumes at 198 Lira [1]. Reports indicate that the rising prices of edible oils and nuts played a significant role in the recent jump of the hunger threshold, although slight decreases in the price of meat and cheese in some regions prevented a sharper growth of this index [3].

Deep Gap Between Income and Real Costs The current state of the Turkish economy reflects a deep gap between the minimum wage and the actual cost of living. According to published data, annual food inflation in July 2026 is estimated at approximately 35.4 percent [1.3.4]. This economic pressure has caused even families with multiple members working for minimum wage to remain below the poverty line. It is said that the current minimum wage only covers the food costs for about 22 days of the month for a family, and purchasing power has severely decreased against overall living costs [1.1.3].

Economic Outlook and Challenges Ahead Although the Central Bank of Turkey has predicted that inflation will decrease to about 26 percent by the end of 2026, field realities in markets such as Alanya and Sakarya show a continuous increase in the prices of basic goods [1.3.1]. Experts believe that without structural reforms in the agricultural sector and a reduction in production costs for farmers, the pressure on people's tables will not decrease [1.3.5]. Currently, providing protein and dairy products has become one of the biggest challenges for the middle and working class in Turkey, requiring urgent economic interventions.

Rising food prices in Turkey have brought the monthly kitchen cost for a family to 36,000 Lira.
